Past Recipients

2006-2007

Robert Williams, a 2006 graduate of Charlottesville High School, has enrolled this fall at Virginia Commonwealth University to study music. His goal is to become a string performer.

Dominique Williams, a 2006 graduate of Charlottesville High School, is attending Liberty University and then plans to go to law school. As an attorney, he says helping children will be a special interest.

Charles Samuel Neer, a 2006 graduate of Charlottesville High School, is attending the College of William and Mary where he will study business. Sam's goal is to become the CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

Rolando Mendez, a 2006 graduate of Charlottesville High School, is a member of the Charlottesville Astronomical Society and operates the telescope at McCormick Observatory during public nights. He is attending the University of Virginia on his way to a career in astrophysics.

Antigone Walker is a teaching assistant at Buford Middle School who wants to become a teacher and perhaps a guidance counselor or public school administrator. She has enrolled at Piedmont Virginia Ccmmunity College with plans to transfer into a four-year education program.

Debra Fields is secretary for three assistant principals at Charlottesville High School, where she has earned the respect of faculty, students and administrators alike. She has also enrolled at Piedmont Virginia Ccmmunity College, where she wants complete her education in early childhood education or counseling.

Rebecca Morton works in the Charlottesville Commissioner of Revenue’s Office. She is taking classes in business at Piedmont Virginia Ccmmunity College and plans to transfer to Mary Baldwin College where she will enroll in the business administration program with an accounting emphasis. With a bachelor’s degree, she will be able to advance with her present employer or explore new possibilities in education or government.

2005-2006

Calandra Bell, a 2005 graduate of Charlottesville High School, is now studying nursing at Liberty University and hopes to work as a nurse at the University of Virginia Medical Center. Known at CHS for her self-motivation and excellent voice, Calandra hopes to become the first in her immediate family to graduate from college.

Sara Klingel is pursuing a degree in elementary education at the University of Virginia. The mother of young children, Sara plans to teach fourth grade in a local school. She will follow in the footsteps of her mother, Becca, a long-time teacher and curriculum coordinator in the Charlottesville City Schools.

Lakeshia Washington is a 2005 graduate of Charlottesville High School, who has been accepted for study at Mary Baldwin College. Lakeshia, who is described as hard-working, reliable, intelligent, and personable, wants to help people in need around the world and eventually make a career in government.

2004-2005

Derek Goins, a 2002 graduate of Charlottesville High School, will receive his degree in business/entrepreneurship from Norfolk State University in December 2006 -- and will become the first member of his immediate family to graduate from a college or university. He intends to open a clothing or sporting goods store and raise a family in Charlottesville.

Patrice Harris, a 1998 graduate of Charlottesville High School who worked in the Charlottesville City Schools, is pursuing a BA in sociology and a teaching license through the Mary Baldwin College Adult Degree Program at Piedmont Virginia Ccmmunity College. She hopes to teach young children, earn her MA, and contribute to the community through volunteer leadership.

Erin Lowry earned a GED from Charlottesville High School in 1990 and is a student in Old Dominion University's Teletechnet satellite learning program at Piedmont Virginia Ccmmunity College. She aspires to build on a BS in human service counseling and psychology through graduate research into the causes of mental illness and return to work for Region Ten.

Michael May, a 2004 graduate of Charlottesville High School, worked during his last two years there to help support his family and twin brothers attending college. After attending the University of Virginia School of Architecture, he hopes to design beautiful and economical low-income housing.
